travelicious BALI

Instead of going home to Vancouver sometimes I meet up with my mum and sister, brother in law and nephew for a bit of an adventure and two years ago (April) we went on a really good one!

I am very lucky! Travelling to Bali is a very amazing experience and I am truly blessed that this trip came into my life! A huge shout out to my sister Meghan who rocked organizing this trip! Including scoring us those beautiful villas!!

So to any pondering minds that are curious or interested, this is how we did Bali…

We booked two accommodations for our trip. 8 days in Ubud and 6 in Seminyak. To be honest I was most excited about our second half since Seminyak is on the ocean and that is always where my heart is. But that is the wonderful thing about travel, you really do not know anything when it comes to new places and the beauty is in finding out! Ubud more than made up for not having an ocean!

My boyfriend (now husband!) and I left Toronto late Friday and after 30 hours of flying and airports (Toronto to Vancouver (where we met up at the airport with my fam!), Vancouver to Hong Kong, Hong Kong to Bali) somehow magically we made it there Sunday afternoon.

When we arrived at the Denpasar airport the villa we had rented on airbnb sent us a driver to pick us up. It was overwhelming trying to find him since there were what seemed like hundreds of drivers all holding up signs with various names on them but alas we found our guy and the journey started.
He took us to get cash, he took us to pick up some groceries (and of course some local beer! Bintang turned out to be delicious!) Then as the sun set (it sets at 6pm and rises at 6am) He took us to the most amazing restaurant. You literally sat on pillows in a hut on top of the water. We ate Balinese curries and drank some dranks! The exhaustion was real but the experiences kept you awake! Our Villa on the rice fields glowed in the dark night. The staff had fresh coconuts waiting for us (perfect after flight quencher!) and it felt like a bloody dream! We showered, climbed into our white canopy beds and slept like babies. Literal freaking babies!
Ubud is very spiritual. They practice Hindu and leave offerings once or twice a day in all areas of homes and streets. There is a beautiful light scent of incents that tickle your nose in the humid breeze. At night I could sit by the pool and hear the monks chanting from all areas of the town. It was magical beyond words!I also can not say enough kind words about the people in Ubud. As Canadians we like to always think of ourselves as kind but we are beat! The people in all of Bali but particularly in Ubud had a softness, a thoughtfulness that I have not seen part of a culture before. From the women who came in and made us gourmet breakfasts of crepes and omelettes to the beautiful man that drove us around and recommended so many wonderful places and experiences to remember. They were all special amazing people.
Bali is part of Indonesia, but the people refer to themselves as Balinese and really have a strong culture all their own. I had no expectation per say but my mind was blown by their faith, their kindness and their food!

The second part of our stay took us to the much busier and hipper Seminyak. Unlike in Ubud where we really needed a driver to leave our beautiful rice fields villa here our villa was moments away from beaches, bars and restaurants galore! Seriously, a moments walk to gourmet coffees and beautiful drink and food!
The eats are wild in Seminyak and there is really everything! Because of tourism and the yoga surfer lifestyle that Bali so easily offers there is a huge selection of vegan and vegetarian restaurants, but also pub foods and lots of fried chicken! It truly is a foodies paradise!
One of the best meals I have ever ate in my life (entire life people!!) was at Sarong. Indian Fusion served family style in the most beautiful surroundings. Some very special dishes are served there and amazing service! But honestly, every meal I ate in Seminyak and Ubud was fabulous!
We spent two weeks living in beautiful villas, playing in our private pools, eating and drinking too much and trying to soak up as much of this amazing place as possible. It is a long journey from my location in the world but one I would most happily do again!!
